Tarangire National Park is famous for two things: elephants and baobab trees. During the dry season (roughly June-October), Tarangire holds one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Tanzania, as herds gather along the Tarangire River, one of the only permanent water sources in the area.
The park's landscape, dotted with ancient baobabs some estimated at over 500 years old, makes it one of the most visually distinctive parks on the Northern Circuit. It is also excellent for birdwatching, with over 550 recorded species.
Best time to visit: the dry season (June-October) is when wildlife concentrates most heavily around the river, making game viewing especially rewarding — though Tarangire is a rewarding stop at any time of year and pairs naturally with the start or end of a Northern Circuit itinerary.
