Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago off Tanzania's coast, best known for Stone Town's UNESCO World Heritage old quarter, centuries of Swahili, Arab, Persian, and Indian trading history, and some of the best beaches on the Indian Ocean. It has been a center of the spice trade for hundreds of years, earning its nickname "Spice Island."
Beyond Stone Town, the island offers powder-white beaches at Nungwi, Kendwa, and Paje, excellent snorkeling and diving on nearby reefs, the Safari Blue sailing excursion through Menai Bay, and Jozani Forest, home to the endemic and endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey.
Best time to visit: June-October and December-February offer the driest, sunniest beach weather, though Zanzibar is a rewarding destination for most of the year and pairs naturally as the relaxing finish to a mainland safari or Kilimanjaro climb.
