5 Things You Have to Do in Stone Town, Zanzibar

Published July 30, 2026

1. Wander the old town with no fixed plan

Stone Town's real charm is in its maze of narrow alleys, Swahili-Arab-Indian architecture, and famously ornate carved wooden doors — some over a century old, each pattern carrying its own meaning. The most rewarding way to experience it is simply to get pleasantly lost for an hour, ideally with a local guide who can point out details you would otherwise walk straight past.

2. Visit the House of Wonders and the old Slave Market site

The House of Wonders (Beit al-Ajaib) was once the tallest building in East Africa and the first in Zanzibar to have electricity. Nearby, the site of the former slave market is now home to a memorial and the Anglican cathedral built directly on the site, a sobering and important piece of the island's history that is well worth the time to properly understand.

3. Take a spice farm tour

Zanzibar earned its nickname "Spice Island" honestly — cloves, vanilla, cardamom, nutmeg, and black pepper have been grown here for centuries. A guided spice farm tour lets you see, smell, and taste everything fresh off the plant, usually finished with a tropical fruit tasting.

4. Watch the sunset at Forodhani Gardens

As the sun sets, this waterfront park transforms into a lively night food market — Zanzibari pizza, fresh seafood skewers, sugarcane juice, and the local specialty urojo soup, all cooked right in front of you. It is as much a social scene as a meal, with locals and travelers mixing over shared plastic tables facing the harbor.

5. Take a sunset dhow cruise

A traditional wooden dhow sailing along the coastline as the sky turns orange over the Indian Ocean is one of those experiences that photographs never quite capture properly. Most cruises include a stop for swimming and end with drinks on deck as the sun goes down — a genuinely relaxing way to close out a day of exploring.

Planning your Stone Town time

Two to three days is enough to properly enjoy Stone Town without rushing, especially if you are combining it with beach time elsewhere on the island. It also pairs naturally with a mainland safari — many of our itineraries end with a few days here as the perfect wind-down after the Serengeti or a Kilimanjaro climb.
